On Feb. 26, sixth and seventh graders from Greenwich’s public and independent schools will enjoy the sounds of the Greenwich Symphony Orchestra.

The orchestra is curating a program for young listeners in its Young People’s Concert Series. This series, created by Associate Conductor Tara Simoncic, will explore the multifaceted role what a conductor actually does.

The program will show the audience how a conductor starts and stops the orchestra, conducts in different meters and tempos, gets the orchestra to play loud and soft, and creates music through physical movement. Several students and teachers will even have the opportunity to try their hand at conducting the Greenwich Symphony during the performance.

Works featured will include excerpts from Beethoven’s Symphony No. 5, Schubert’s Unfinished Symphony, Dvorak’s Symphony No. 9, the Blue Danube Waltz, and Stars and Stripes.

The Young People’s Concerts are designed to introduce students to the symphony orchestra and the music of the great masters. Age-appropriate study materials for the works to be performed are provided to school music teachers for use in their classroom preparation for the concert.

The concerts are given free of charge during the school day to students in grades second through seventh. This year alone, approximately six thousand students will attend one of the concerts. The series is made possible through generous contributions from parent-teacher associations, the Greenwich Board of Education, corporations, foundations, GSO fundraising events and individual contributions.

Performances will take place at 9:15 a.m., 11 a.m., and 12:45 p.m. at the Greenwich High School auditorium. There is limited seating for parents and members of the public at the concerts. For more information, call the symphony office at 203-869-2664.
