Green Award winners are announced

Morris Media Group has announced the winners of its first annual Green Awards and an honor is coming to a Greenwich organization.

From an extensive pool of nominees throughout Westchester, Fairfield and Litchfield Counties,  three organizations were selected: Greenwich organization Greening Our Children, New Canaan-based Freund Farm, and Roni Widmer, a Fairfield resident.

Greening Our Children’s mission is to help educate people about exposure to harmful chemicals in everyday living environments. Ms. Widmer has been working towards promoting green lifestyles, with accomplishments such as her annual sheep-shearing event and well-received after-school program, Jelly Hill Farm Camp in Fairfield. The third honoree, Freund Farm, was noted for his significant green accomplishments, including the installation of a methane digester which turn waste into fuel, and also the invention and introduction of CowPots, which recycle manure into millions of flowerpots.

A panel of three judges presided over the selection committee. This group included Robert F. Kennedy Jr., one of the leading environmental players in the country, who is also the chairman of the Waterkeeper Alliance and a professor of Environmental Law at Pace University School of Law.

In addition to the geographical requirement of location in Fairfield, Litchfield, or Westchester, the Morris Media Group Green Awards recognized businesses, non-profits, and individuals that are leading the local fight to protect the environment while also creating a sustainable social and economic community.

The awards will be presented at a ceremony on  Feb. 27 at the Artisan at the Delamar in Southport.
