Church holds Country Weekend program

Attendees of the Second Congregational Church’s Country Weekend from Feb. 21 to 23 can look forward  to a program full of dance and music.

The schedule includes a concert by singer-songwriter Terry Thompson, a potluck supper, square and line dancing, and a country-themed sermon.

On Friday, Feb. 21, from 5 to 6:30 p.m, Mr. Thompson will lead a master class in songwriting, including his creative process, for all interested young people. On Saturday, Feb. 22, from 4 to 5:15 p.m., Mr. Thompson will offer a concert with Second Congregational Church Youth Choir participation. Selections will include Thompson’s moving song, Coming Clean. From 5:30 to 7 p.m., there will be a potluck supper, prepared by church members, and then from 7 to 9 p.m., there will be square and line dancing with professional caller Pat Cannon from Foot and Fiddle Dance Company.

On Sunday, Feb. 23 at 10:30 a.m., during the church’s worship service, Mr. Thompson will perform with the Youth Choir. In addition, his wife Carmen Thompson, a seminary graduate who has served as a youth and college minister, will deliver the sermon.

An accomplished singer and songwriter, Mr. Thompson has had several songs and a CD, That’ll Work, published and recorded. He has toured extensively across the United States and in countries such as  Japan, Korea, Ukraine and Australia with musical groups including America and Charly McClain. In addition, an acting career has taken him from Shakespeare on the stage to commercials for such entities as KFC, Toyota and the American Red Cross. He also is a master carpenter and woodworker, artist and animator.

Admission to all Country Weekend events is free, with a suggested donation of $10 for the Feb. 22 concert. Events will be held at the church, at 139 E. Putnam Avenue. Reservations are suggested for the potluck supper and the square and line dancing. Sign up at
