Maritime Aquarium seeks volunteers

Greenwich residents can pursue their interest in marine animals and share your knowledge and enthusiasm with others by becoming a member of the volunteer staff at The Maritime Aquarium at Norwalk.

Interviews for potential volunteers will be held on Tues., Feb. 11 and Thursday, Feb. 20, at 5 and 7 p.m. both days. Applicants need only attend one of the sessions.

Volunteers must be at least 15 years old. Weekday volunteers are asked to commit to at least four hours per week. The minimum commitment is four hours per month for weekend volunteers. Prior knowledge about marine animals isn’t necessary to be a Maritime Aquarium volunteer. All basics will be taught during a four-week training course, which will meet on Tuesdays and Thursdays, from 7 to 9 p.m., beginning March 6.

Working as a volunteer involves a wide variety of responsibilities. From behind-the-scenes office and special-event assistance, to gallery guiding and helping visitors learn more about the represented animals of Long Island Sound, there’s plenty to do. Lisa Slinsky, assistant director of volunteers and community service, emphasizes the importance of the volunteer corps to the museum.

“Helping visitors, especially children, learn about Long Island Sound is personally rewarding and crucial in building public awareness about issues affecting our local environment,” said Ms. Slinsky. “The volunteer program is vital to the mission of The Maritime Aquarium and its educational goals. Plus, it’s a fun way to join up with a group of people who have similar interests.”

A $40 fee covers the costs of training materials and uniforms. After six months of service, volunteers receive a free individual Aquarium membership, entitling them to discounts in the Gift Shop and on many programs.

Advance registration is required for the interview sessions and volunteer training. To sign up or for more information, email [email protected] or call 203-852-0700, ext. 2225.
