BANC kids are Reading Champions

The Greenwich United Way’s Reading Champions program funded by the Rotary Club of Greenwich has completed its fourth year. At 11 sites, more than 102 tutors are serving more than 344 children in Greenwich schools and after-school programs.

One of those programs is the Byram Archibald Neighborhood Center (BANC) After School Program, which recently held its Reading Champions Graduation Ceremony on June 4. At the ceremony, 49 students in grades K-5 graduated with the help of 11 dedicated Reading Champion tutors. Graduates at BANC were honored by their Reading Champion tutor with a Certificate of Achievement, a medal and a book while family members observed and cheered them on.

BANC After School Program is operated by the Greenwich Department of Social Services. Statistics have shown that the Reading Champions program has a 97% rate of children meeting proficiency in reading and graduating from the program, something that’s a critical need for the department to address.

For more information on the program or to apply to be a tutor, applications can be found at Unitedway-greenwich.com or by calling Jenny Byxbee Greenwich, Youth Services Coordinator at 203-869-2221.
