Conservancy makes 2013 a good year for Greenwich’s urban forest

Now beginning its eighth year since its founding as a nonprofit environmental organization focusing on the planting, protection and maintenance of trees, the Greenwich Tree Conservancy has been responsible for the planting of over 1,000 trees in the past seven years on public lands.

The Conservancy works closely with town Tree Warden Bruce Spaman and his department and also partners with other community organizations, including the Greenwich Land Trust, the Garden Education Center, the Bruce Museum, and Greenwich Green and Clean. The conservancy has sponsored many lectures and field trips as a way of educating the public about the essential value of trees, which is sometimes forgotten.

Our town was fortunate in 2013 not to have had any major storms that felled trees, but so many trees were lost in Greenwich during the Irene and Sandy storms that we still need to make up for those as well as add to the greening of our town.

All tree planting is done following the concept of “Right Tree, Right Place,” which means that the eventual height of a tree needs to be taken into account if the site is close to power lines or structures.

The Greenwich Tree Conservancy invites the public to suggest sites for trees they would like to see planted either on town property or nonprofit sites. Please contact the conservancy at [email protected] or post on our Facebook page.

The Greenwich Tree Conservancy is a nonprofit organization open to all interested citizens, created to preserve and enhance the tree and forest resources of Greenwich, Conn., to benefit the community, its health and its quality of life.
