Three arrested for fraud

An alleged bank fraud was foiled Saturday by a teller and the quick work of the Greenwich Police Department.

Three suspects were arrested a short distance from the Chase Bank at 19 West Putnam Avenue on Saturday after fleeing the scene, where they allegedly worked together using fraudulent identification in an attempt to withdraw less than $3,000 from a local account holder, police said.

The suspects, Bronx, N.Y., residents Vanessa J. Armstrong, 56, Wendell T. Lyons, 26, and Mark D. Lilly, 28, were each charged with third degree larceny, interfering with an officer and criminal attempt. Mr. Lyons and Mr. Lilly were both additionally charged with conspiracy, while Ms. Armstrong was charged with unlawful completion or reproduction of a credit card, identity theft, criminal impersonation and first degree forgery.

According to Greenwich Public Information Officer Lt. Kraig Gray, the bank teller handling the transaction found inconsistencies between the identification given and what the suspects were requesting. He said that bank employees had been suspicious of the trio prior to Saturday’s incident and that the teller’s sharp observation and quick response to the situation was of considerable help to the police making the apprehension.

Police responded to the scene but the suspects had left the bank prior to their arrival. However they were quickly identified nearby and taken into custody.

The individuals are each being held on a $25,000 bond and are due in court on June 18.

While processing Mr. Lilly for the arrest, police said they received confirmation of an active warrant for him from the Morris County Prosecutor’s Office in Morristown, N.J. The prosecutor’s office related that it would extradite Mr. Lilly based on a failure to appear charge stemming from a past arrest for alleged fraudulent use of a credit card, forgery, exhibiting false documents and conspiracy. Mr. Lilly was charged in that matter with one count of fugitive from justice and held on an additional bond of $100,000.
