Greenwich Fire Department rescues teens after falling through ice

The Greenwich Fire Department has released a report after the afternoon incident in which two teenagers fell into ice on Willowmere Circle.

According to the department, a call was received at approximately 1:14 p.m. on Wednesday, urging emergency response after the two youths fell through the ice in the area of 73 Willowmere Circle. Greenwich Fire Department’s Engine 5 arrived on scene within approximately five minutes of being dispatched according to Assistant Fire Chief Robert Kick and, at that time Engine 5 Lieutenant Charles Teichert reported two persons in the prone position on the ice and began affecting a rescue.

Assistant Chief Kick said that both of the teens had fallen completely through the ice but that they had managed to get themselves out of the water back onto the ice. However, he added that, at the time of the fire department’s arrival, the teens were “too cold and scared to move.”

Lt. Teichert proceeded approximately 50 feet out onto the ice and rescued the first of the teens. The Greenwich Fire Department Tower 1 engine arrived on scene shortly after Engine 5 and Assistant Chief Kick said that Tower 1 Firefighter Robert Roth then went out the same distance to rescue the second teen.

“Both Lt. Teichert and Firefighter Roth were assisted by their respective crew members in the operation of their tethers and retrieval system,” Assistant Chief Kick said. “From the time of arrival of Greenwich Fire Engine 5, it took the firefighters from Engine 5 and Tower 1 only four minutes to rescue both parties and bring them safely on shore. Both parties were turned over to Greenwich Emergency Medical Service for evaluation and transport to the hospital.”

There has been no word on the teens’ condition and their names have not been released.
