Local students to play at cancer benefit

Greenwich students Kaitlin Ganshaw, Sophia Georgas, Chiara Schmidt and Claudia Schmidt are stepping up in the fight against cancer on Jan. 25 for The Pop Music Academy’s Annual Showcase Performance at Stamford’s Rippowam Middle School to benefit Stamford Hospital’s Bennett Cancer Center Music Therapy Program.

The students will be among the singers, musicians, live band and professional performers to be featured in the showcase.

“This is the second year Christine’s Academy is fundraising for us,” said Stamford Hospital Music Therapist Amy Zabin, a former Post columnist and town resident. “Last year’s showcase was the best show I’ve ever seen run for kids — ever.”

Dr. Zabin works with patients individually and in groups to provide emotional coping tools that help decrease fears, pain and feelings of isolation for people who are hospitalized or receiving chemotherapy. Before the show’s intermission, Dr. Zabin will briefly speak about her work with the program.

A portion of proceeds from the event will be donated to this special department and information will be on display throughout the night.

Reduced pre-sale tickets start at $10 and can be purchased by calling 203-322-4POP or in person at The Pop Music Academy at 1200 High Ridge Road in Stamford. General admission is $20 at the door the night of the show.

Aspiring artists will sing lead and background vocals as well as join the live band on their instruments during the big performance. The night will also debut the new “Popstars 101” class project, where young students got the chance to record their song in a professional recording studio and perform in their own music video.

The showcase takes place in the Rippowam Middle School auditorium on Jan. 25 at 7 p.m. Doors open at 6:30.
