The GHS Jazz Ensemble will be performing this weekend as a benefit for its upcoming trip to Cuba.

You can help send the Greenwich High School Band to Cuba by attending its big band dance benefit called A Night In Havana.

The dance is scheduled for Saturday, Jan. 25, from 7 to 11 p.m. in the ballroom of First Presbyterian Church in Greenwich.

All are invited for a night of dancing, free salsa lessons, drinks and Cuban inspired hors d’oeuvres, set to the dynamic sounds of big band swing music performed by the GHS Jazz Ensemble.

Like big bands of the swing era, the GHS Jazz Ensemble has 18 members. Considered one of the premiere high school jazz bands in the tri-state area, the group competes annually in the regional Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Essentially Ellington Festival.

“These kids are so accomplished that they were able to master about 35 jazz standards in only four months’ time” said GHS Band director John Yoon. “I guarantee they will get people up and dancing.”

Proceeds from the evening will benefit the band’s scholarship fund for the upcoming Cuba trip.

Highlights of the trip will include master classes on salsa music and percussion with renown Cuban musicians, a workshop and joint concert with the National Band of Cuba, a concert at a Cuban school for special needs children, tours of Old Havana and the local art scene, and an evening socializing and performing with Cuban high school students.

Tickets for the benefit are $75, and can be purchased up to a day in advance online by downloading a form on the GHS Band website and mailing a check to the address listed.
