Joan Cleworth, 84, proud resident, magazine model

Joan W. Cleworth, 84, of Old Greenwich, died peacefully at her home on Tuesday, January 7th.

Joan was born on January 19, 1929 in the Bronx, New York and was the daughter of Winfield F. and Edna (Jackameit) Wilson.

Joan began her professional career as a secretary at Conde Nast in New York City, where her natural beauty led to several modeling opportunities including the cover of Glamour magazine’s December 1948 issue.

Joan was particularly proud of her former role as deaconess at The First Congregational Church of Greenwich in Old Greenwich. While there, Joan had the opportunity to type and compile the sermons of former pastor Herman Reissig, a man she admired greatly.

Joan is survived by sons Jonathan W. Cleworth of New Canaan, David C. Cleworth and his wife Mary Jane of Wesley Chapel, Fla., Christopher W. Cleworth and his wife Janet of Johns Creek, Ga., Timothy J. Cleworth and his wife Lauren of Schenectady, N.Y., and her beloved daughter Sarah A. Cleworth of Old Greenwich. Joan was also blessed with six grandchildren— Alexandra, Grace, Megan, Madeleine, Kendall, and Calvin.

A memorial service for family members will be held at The First Congregational Church of Greenwich in Old Greenwich at a time to be determined.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Greenwich Hospital Home Hospice by calling 203-863-3883.
