Greenwich High wrestling team goes 3-1 at Xavier Duals

The Greenwich High School wrestling team took the trip upstate earlier today for competition at the Xavier Duals and finished 3-1.

Big Red beat Pomperaug 57-13 and Middletown 47-28, but had a much closer battle against Guilford. Getting a pinfall victory in the final event against Guilford, Brendan Aguda was able to score a pinfall 17 seconds into his 106-pound weight class match to help Greenwich get the 34-32 victory.

Greenwich High’s lone loss on the day came at against No. 12 ranked Windham, 31-29.

Big Red had three grapplers finish 4-0 on the day. Aguda dominated the 106-pound division, while Alex Jarombek won all his matches at 132. Big Red’s heavyweight, Chris Fischer, also finished perfect.

In addition, Greenwich added three wrestlers that only picked up one loss on the day, as Alex Margeotes took care of his competition at 113. Justin Montier was solid at 170 and Erik Menchaca picked up three wins at the 220-pound weight class.

Against Guilford, Margeotes started the day with a forfeit win at 113, while Jack Benenson scored a 14-8 decision over Andrew Ignoto at 120. From there it was all Guilford, as they five of six weight classes. Big Red’s lone victor in that stretch was Jarombek with a 14-2 decision at 132.

Montier stopped the bleeding with a 7-2 decision over CJ Anthony at 170. Greenwich won the final three matches against Guilford, as Menchaca and Fischer won via forfeit and Aguda sealed the victory with a pinfall at 17 seconds into his match.

The Cardinals had a much easier time against both Pomperaug and Middletown. Against Pomperaug, Jarombek (132), Montier (170), Aguda (106) and Margeotes (113) each netted pinfall victories, while Menchaca netted a close 1-0 decision at 220 and Freiheit won the 152-pound weight class with a 6-5 victory over Nicholas Civitello.

Big Red had a slew of pinfall victories against Middletown. After Benenson won the 126-pound weight class via forfeit to start the match, Mike Ceci took care of his opponent at 132 with a pinfall 3:16 into the match.

After Jarombek won the 138-pound weight class with a 4-2 decision, Bryce Stanback pinned Evan Grzeszcyk at 152 with only two seconds to play in the match. Keeping the good times rolling was Montier, as he scored a 11-3 decision over his opponent in the 170-pound weight class.

At 106, Aguda had the same fate as Montier, scoring an easy 14-2 win over John Grasis in the 106-pound weight class. Up next was Margeotes, who netted a pinfall victory over Noah Sylvester at the 1:54 mark of the 113-pound weight class.

In Greenwich only loss on day day, they held their own in a back-and-forth battle against Windham. Starting at 132, Jarombek netted a 2-1 decision over Cullan Contos. At 152, Frehei pinned Jaivon Glidden 53 seconds into their match for the six points.

Big Red got another pinfall victory at 182, as Thomas William won his match against Elijah Sanchez at the 4:33 mark. From there, Big Red won three of the next four matches. Menchaca went into three overtimes, but finally scored the 3-2 victory. After Fischer pinned his Windham opponent only 20 seconds into the match, Aguda dominated Julio Flores in the 106-pound weight class, scoring the 15-0 technical fall victory.

With the three wins, Greenwich upped its record to 5-2 on the season and will be back in action Wednesday when they host Staples High School.
