Greenwich boys hoopsters slam Fairfield Warde, GHS girls fall in thriller

It was a mixed day for Greenwich High School basketball Wednesday evening.

At Fairfield Warde High School, the Greenwich High School boys basketball team showed little slowdown after playing back-to-back games, as they crushed the Mustangs 74-57.

Nobody had a better night than GHS senior CJ Byrd, as the captain finished with a game-high 32 points. Not far behind Byrd was fellow senior captain Alex Wolf, who finished with 13 points. Joining Wolf with 13 points was Henry Golden, while Patrick Santini added six points.

Warde was led by Giacomo Brancato, who finished with 18 points. Teammate Chris Smaldone added 16 in the losing effort.

With the victory, Big Red improved to 6-0 overall and a perfect 4-0 in the Fairfield County Interscholastic Athletic Conference.

On the other side of Fairfield County, the Greenwich High School girls basketball team was in a back-and-forth battle with Fairfield Warde.

However in the end, it was Fairfield’s Kaitlyn McKenna who grabbed the rebound and scored on the putback in the final seconds to give the Mustangs the 45-43 victory over the Lady Cards.

Greenwich was led by Jaime Kockenmeister, who finished with 20 points. Alexa Moses added nine points, while Leigh Galletta grabbed seven points on the night. Abby Wolf finished with five points, but added 15 rebounds and eight blocked shots.

With the loss, Greenwich fell to 6-2 overall, while Warde improved to 7-1 on the season.
