YWCA to present annual MLK program

Just in time for the anniversary of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s birtday, the YWCA’s annual MLK celebration will take place Jan. 16 and will feature Yale University professor Jonathan Holloway, Ph.D., chair of the Department of African-America Studies, and Greenwich High School senior Treasure Pray.

“We are very pleased to be able to spotlight someone of Professor Holloway’s credentials at this very important event and to honor Treasure for her efforts to eliminate racism… one of the core missions of the YWCA,” YWCA President and CEO Adrianne Singer said.

The program will consist of an introduction by Ms. Singer, an address by Dr. Holloway, the awarding of a YWCA Racial Justice Scholarship to Treasure Pray and introductions and remarks by First Selectman Peter Tesei and other dignitaries. Sen. Richard Blumenthal (D-Conn.) and Congressman Jim Himes have also been invited. Both are town residents and have been regulars at past events.

In addition, Gertrude White Gallery, The Waverly Girls will present an art exhibition of African-American women who have had a positive impact on society. Refreshments will be served thanks to Whole Foods, Greenwich and Costco, Port Chester, N.Y.

Dr. Holloway, a specialist in post-emancipation United States history, is the author of Jim Crow Wisdom: Memory and Identity in Black America Since 1940. He also edited Ralph Bunche’s A Brief and Tentative Analysis of Negro Leadership. He received the William Clyde DeVane Award in 2009 for Distinguished Scholarship and Teaching and has held fellowships with the Stanford University Humanities Center, the Ford Foundation, and the W.E.B. DuBois Institute at Harvard University.
