Police arrest suspect in fatal hit and run collision

UPDATED MONDAY 11:20 A.M. — Police have arrested a suspect in the fatal hit and run collision that took place in the early morning hours on Dec. 28 in the William Street parking lot in Byram.

According to Greenwich Police Department Public Information Officer Lt. Kraig Gray, 26-year-old Vyacheslav Cherepov of Ridgefield has been arrested and charged with Evading: Serious Physical Injury. Mr. Cherepov is currently being held on a $500,000 bond. Those charges could potentially be upgraded to something more serious and police say that the investigation is ongoing.

On Dec. 30 GPD found that the suspect vehicle, a red 2006 Pontiac G6, had returned to the William Street parking lot where the incident occurred. Interviews with Mr. Cherepov, the vehicle’s owner, reportedly provided investigators with probable cause for his arrest.

Police have also released the name of the victim of the hit and run. Meghan Beebe, 21, of Middlebury, was transported to Stamford Hospital’s Emergency Room after being struck and dragged by a vehicle, where she later passed away as a result of her injuries.

Mr. Cherepov is due in court Jan. 6.

UPDATED SUNDAY 5:10 P.M. — The Greenwich Police Department is investigating a fatal hit and run incident that took place in the very early hours of Saturday morning in Byram.

According to police, a 21-year-old woman from Middlebury was struck by a vehicle in the parking lot on William Street. The driver then allegedly fled the scene. The woman’s name has not been released pending notification of her family but she is being described as a student.

The victim was transported to Stamford Hospital’s Emergency Room for treatment but died on Saturday. According to police, she was retrieving items from a car which was parked in the William Street lot, when the suspect’s car drove into the lot and struck her. The driver allegedly stopped briefly and then drove away, fleeing the area and dragging the woman beneath the car.

Police described the driver as a white male though he could be Hispanic. He has short brown buzzed cut hair and police said he is “tan with good skin, brown eyes and brown eyebrows.” Additionally he is described as skinny and appears to be young and said he was wearing a long sleeved shirt with a gold chain and cross.

On Sunday, police updated the description of the man’s vehicle. According to police, the investigation has determined the evading vehicle is likely a Pontiac G6 Model in the year 2005-2010 timeframe. It’s color is thought to be either burgandy or dark red and it’s believed the vehicle has Connecticut plates.
