Greenwich girls basketball doubles up New Canaan in LaVista opener, 42-24

Feeding off an impressive 27-6 lead at the half, the Greenwich High School girls basketball team won its first game in the annual LaVista Tournament over New Canaan High School, 42-24 earlier today.

“It felt good to come in here and kind of have a repeat of what we started last year,” GHS head coach Chrys Hernandez said. “Our play was a little sloppy and I think we have to clean that up going into Monday’s game. I’m happy because a win is always better than a loss, but at the same time we need to keep our sights on the bigger picture, which is being a lot more cohesive and not taking off quarters. We haven’t put together four quarters of basketball yet.”

Big Red, which out-rebounded the Rams 37-12 on the day, was led by captain Jaime Kockenmeister, who finished with 10 points and seven rebounds.

“Jaime is a very consistent player and is one of our captains,” Hernandez said. “She works hard, day in and day out and you can’t ask for more than that.”

Not to be outdone was Leigh Galletta, who finished with six points, but also added three assists and one steal. Alexa Moses added eight points, while Caroline Beneville pitched in with six points and six rebounds. Freshman Jayla Faison picked up three assists and two steals.

With the victory, Greenwich improves to 4-1 on the season and will be back in action Monday afternoon at 3 when they battle Darien High School at the New Canaan High School gym in the second game of the LaVista Tournament.

“We absolutely need to work on finishing around the basket,” Hernandez said. “We had a lot of opportunities that were two and five foot baskets. Our stats inside against New Canaan were 9-for-36 in the paint and that’s not good to have. We need to finish inside.”
