Greenwich wrestlers tame Tigers, 45-19

Dominating the middle and heavy weights, the Greenwich High School wrestling team won its first match back from Christmas break in grand fashion, beating Ridgefield High School, 45-19 earlier this morning at the RHS gym.

Starting with Bryce Stanback’s 9-8 decision over Ridgefield’s Shilstone in the 145-pound weight class, Big Red won all but one match the rest of the way.

Daniel Gutman (160) and Erik Menchaca (220) were able to net pinfall victories in their weight class. Gutman wasted little time getting his pinfall win, as he beat Tyler Hamilton with 58 seconds gone by in the match. Menchaca did one better, pinning his Ridgefield opponent with only 38 seconds gone by in his match.

In the 195-pound weight class, Big Red’s Mitchell Methercott scored the 6-5 decision over Nathaneal Pfohl, while Jack Freiheit (152), Justin Montier (170) and heavweight Chris Fischer all won by forfeit.

Greenwich started the match off with a 6-1 victory by Brandon Aguda at 106, as he beat Bryon Sleight. Up next was Alex Margeotes, who won the 113-pound weight class for the Cards with a pinfall victory over Jared Donnelly at the 3:21 mark of the match.

From there, it was all Ridgefield, as Colin Storm (120), Chris Savoca (126), Kevin Side (132) and Matt Philbin (138) all scored decision victories over their respective Big Red opponent.

With the victory, Greenwich improved to 1-1 on the season. Up next for Big Red will be the Shoreline Invitational, which will take place Saturday at New Rochelle, New York.
