Greenwich High wrestling wins Shelton Invitational for third time in four years

Although the host team kept things close, the Greenwich High School wrestling team was able to come away with the Shelton Invitational championship for the third time in four years yesterday a Shelton High School.

Big Red finished with 197 points, while Shelton placed second overall with 178.5. Grabbing the bronze was Greens Farms Academy, which netted 170.5 points.

The Dragons were able to inch by Westhill High School, as the Vikings took fourth with 170 points. Rounding out the top five was Amity, which grabbed 144.5 points.

Greenwich took the championship by its strong showing throughout the day. Big Red finished with four finalists, seven medalists and nine wrestlers that finished in the top four.

Leading the way for Big Red was Alex Jarombek in the 138-pound weight class, as he finished the day winning his weight class and going 4-0. Included in his victory was a pin over Jeff Glover of Westhill, a returning CIAC class LL medalist. In the finals, Jarombek claimed victory with a 6-1 victory over Michael Cala of Amity Regional.

The Cardinals added to the total by placing three grapplers in their respective weight class.  Alex Margeotes competed in the 113-pound weight class and finished 2-1 overall with two pins. Jack Benenson hit the mat in the 120-pound division and finished 3-1 with two pins. Rounding out the second place finishers was Bryce Stanback, who went 2-1 on the day in the 145-pound division.

Three more GHS wrestlers took third overall on the day. Justin Montier went 4-1 overall in the 170-pound weight class and all his wins came via the pinfall. Thomas Williams did one better in the 182-pound division. He also went 4-1 on the day and had four pins, however Williams’ pins took place in the first period of every match.

Greenwich High heavyweight Chris Fischer also had a great day, finishing 3-1 overall and netting three pins.

The duo of Ben Jones and Jack Stevens helped Greenwich High School gain valuable team points, as they both finished fourth on the day. Jones, 132-pound weight class, finished 3-2 overall. Stevens netted the same results in the 145-pound weight class.
