Equinox offers health tips for holiday season

This holiday season, Equinox Instructors from Greenwich are sharing their top holiday fitness tips to keep the energy up and the pounds off. The fitness organization recommends six specific tips for staying motivated and on track with your fitness routine throughout the season.

The first tip is to “write it down.” Set goals and stay focused by keeping goals SMART (Specific, Measurable, Accountable, Realistic and Trackable.) Consider logging what you’ve consumed after each meal or snack and writing down how you will reward yourself for completing each fitness goal.

If you are having trouble working out during the holidays, it is also helpful to stay motivated by setting up physical activities with friends such as bike riding. Group fitness goals help everyone stay on track.

Making a commitment is also essential. Make a commitment to your fitness goals before the holidays even start.

“When it’s a lifestyle, it doesn’t matter what time of year it is,” said Equinox Greenwich Instructor Giovanni Roselli.

The growing trend of eating “clean” is also something Equinox experts recommend. One of the best ways to recover after the holidays is to do a post holiday cleanse. But before cleansing, make sure you are eating clean by eating fresh food and going for the green.

Equinox Scarsdale Instructor Becky Molloy said, “If it’s from a box or wrapped in plastic, it’s not worth ingesting.”

Another recommendation is limiting alcohol intake. Alcohol lowers inhibitions and people tend to make poor eating choices after a few too many adult beverages. Alcohol additionally tends to lower energy levels the day after drinking.

Finally, Equinox fitness experts are reminding the community that with the onset of the holiday season come many personal concessions, but missed workouts do not have to be one of them. Find ways to keep active, such as a 16-minute fitness video from Q by Equinox that requires no equipment, which can be found at youtube.com/watch?v=iTRdIGkaB1A.
