Connecticut Speaker of the House to discuss regionalism

The South Western Region Metropolitan Planning Organization (SWRMPO) will meet tomorrow, Dec. 12, to discuss transportation and non-transportation policy, programs and projects that concern the South Western Region.

The meeting will feature Connecticut’s Speaker of the House, State Rep. Brendan Sharkey who will address regionalism.

In addition to action on TIP amendments and the 2014 SWRMPO meeting schedule, SWRMPO officers will be elected. The region’s recently elected CEOs will be welcomed and departing elected officials will be recognized for their service.

The SWRMPO is comprised of the chief elected officials of the South Western Region’s eight towns of Darien, Greenwich, New Canaan, Norwalk, Stamford, Weston, Westport and Wilton, and the directors of the region’s transit districts. As mandated by federal regulations, the SWRMPO is responsible for transportation policy development, planning and programming of federal transportation funding for the region.

The SWRMPO meets the on the fourth Thursday of every month, at either the Norwalk Transit District or the South Western Regional Planning Agency. The public is invited to participate.

Greenwich First Selectman Peter Tesei is slated to attend the event given his stated concerns about ongoing regionalization efforts in the state and it is expected he will speak about the meeting at today’s Board of Selectmen meeting at 1 p.m. at Town Hall.

The Dec. 12 meeting will be held at the Norwalk Transit District located at 275 Wilson Avenue, Norwalk and will begin promptly at 8:15 a.m.
