Mail theft on the rise in town

The Greenwich Police Department is advising residents of a recent series of thefts from residential mailboxes.

In the past 10 weeks, there have been more than a dozen reported thefts from mailboxes, most occurring in the mid-country region of town. Similar incidents are being investigated across the region.

It is suggested that homeowners avoid placing outgoing mail, especially checks, credit sensitive information, or valuables, within their mailbox for collection by the mail carrier. Collection boxes and mailing directly from a US Post Office facility are more secure options.

Incidents of mail theft can be reported directly to the US Postal Service at 203-625-3168.

Suspicious activity should be reported immediately to the Greenwich Police Department at 203-622-8001.
