Traditions abound at holiday concert

music note stockParticipate in a decades-old tradition on Dec. 13 at 8 p.m. when St. Catherine’s Church will be sponsoring The Fairfield University Glee Club and Chamber Singers for their Annual Memorial Concert, entitled “Wondrous Love.”

Held at St. Catherine’s for more than 25 years, the event was started when Father Walter Smith, S.J. from Fairfield University was a visiting priest at St. Catherine’s and the advisor to the chorale. To celebrate Christmas, Father Vincent O’Connor invited the choir to sing at St. Catherine’s.

After Father O’Connor’s passing the church kept this tradition as a memorial to him. Carole Ann Maxwell, a preeminent conductor of collegiate, community and professional choral ensembles, will be leading the choir of more than 100 undergraduates.

This year’s concert will feature choral music from several different traditions, including the western and African Christian tradition and the Eastern European tradition. The groups will also perform a unique rendition of Deck the Halls, and an early Christian folk hymn, What Wondrous Love is This? The hymn’s lyrics were first published in a camp meeting song book in 1811.
