St. Catherine’s to hold auditions for ‘Barnum’

If you’d like to be part of the show that traces the career of America’s greatest showman, P.T. Barnum, from 1835 to the formation of The Greatest Show on Earth, be sure to audition for the St. Catherine’s Players production of Barnum on Dec. 2, 3 or 4.

Auditions are open for children at least eight-years-old and adults of all ages. Those who want to audtion should come with a prepared song and sheet music for the accompanist. In addition, bring a list of your rehearsal and production date conflicts (January through March) to write on your audition sheet for the director.

Rehearsals begin on Monday, Jan. 6 and are held Monday through Thursday evenings. Production dates are Feb. 28, March 1, March 2, March 7, March 8, and March 9 with curtain times of Fridays at 8, Saturdays at 7:30 and Sundays at 2.

Stuart Adelberg, director, has led the St. Catherine’s Players for more than 20 years, and Rita Lapcevic, musical director, has been with the group for more than 10 years.

Barnum, with music by Cy Coleman, lyrics by Michael Stewart and book by Mark Bramble, won Tony awards for Best Actor, Scenic Designer and Costume Design, the Drama Desk Award for Best Actor and the Outer Critics Circle Award for Broadway Musical.

Roles available at auditions include Phineas Taylor Barnum, The Prince of Humbug; Chairy Barnum, Mr. Barnum’s wife; Joice Heth, the oldest woman alive; Tom Thumb, the smallest man in the world; Jenny Lind, Swedish woman; Julius Goldschmidt, Jenny Lind’s manager; a female blues singer; James A Bailey, a small circus owner; Chester Lyman, Joice Heth’s manager; Amos Scudder, owner of the American Museum and a host of extras (adults, teenagers and children over the age of eight) in a huge selection of speaking and non-speaking parts including tumblers, jugglers, clowns, aerialists, acrobats, gymnasts, bricklayers, museum patrons, the Bridgeport Pageant Choir and bands of every size, shape and description.

Auditions will be held on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, Dec. 2, 3 and 4 at 7:30 p.m. at St. Catherine of Siena Church in the Lucey Parish Hall, 4 Riverside Avenue. Volunteers are also need for tech crew, set painting/decoration and costumes. Email [email protected] with your interest and expertise.
