Greenwich runners fare well during annual Back Country Bushwhack

It was through the trails and through the streams and on to victory for Stamford’s Anatolie Vartosu, as he led the field of 170 hardy runners at the recent 29th annual Greenwich Back Country Bushwhack cross-country race at Camp Simmons.

Vartosu, 45, had a time of 22 minutes, nine seconds over the challenging four-mile course in which the runners ran through trails, slogged through streams and climbed over logs.

Will Santora, 14, from New Canaan, was runner-up with a time of 26:02. John Bosacco, 40, from Rye, N.Y., was five seconds behind Santora in third place.

Allen Roost placed fourth with a 26:17 while leading a tight pack of Greenwich residents that included Erick Wilson (26:18), Chetan Bhandari (26:19) and 17-year-old Chad Novek (26:19).

Brian Sandor, 14, of New Canaan also was clocked in 26:19. Matt Parry (26:23) from Queens, N.Y. placed ninth and Greenwich 12-year-old Chris Dunn (26:31) completed the top 10.

Two youngsters were the top two among the 73 females. Olivia Scotti, 13, from Bronxville, N.Y., was the Open Women champion and 18th overall with a 27:47. Olivia Holm, 12, from Old Greenwich was just six seconds behind Scotti and 19th overall as the runner-up female. Ann Williams of Old Greenwich was the third female and 26th overall with a 29:44.

The other Greenwich residents in the top 25 were Daryl Kennedy (13th place with a 27:13), John Krasniewicz (14th, 27:18), Reinhardt Olsen (20th, 28:22), Joe Darula (24th, 28:39) and Andrew Wiener (25th, 29:33).

The event also included Max’s Mile for other young runners and that was won by Chris Lukens, 13, of Riverside with a 5:03. Frank Bonaddio, 10, was runner-up with a 5:31 and just two seconds behind him in third place was fellow Norwalk resident Christy Russo, 14, who was the fastest girl.

The Back Country Bushwhack was the 11th of this year’s 12 events in the Betteridge Greenwich Cup 2013 series. The final event will be the Jingle Bell Jog for Pathways (three-mile road race) at 9 a.m. on Dec. 8 at Threads and Treads.
