Greenwich High boys soccer, girls volleyball advance to class LL semis

It was a busy, but successful day for Greenwich High School, as both the boys soccer and girls volleyball teams came away with convincing victories in their respective Connecticut Interscholastic Athletic Conference class LL quarterfinal matches.

In the boys soccer game at Cardinal Stadium earlier today, Greenwich High saw a familiar quarterfinals foe. No. 8 Amity Regional was the same opponent that Big Red saw in last year’s quarterfinal game and Greenwich had the same success this time around, winning 2-0.

Greenwich got goals from Will Gittings and Parick Santini, while GHS goalie Santiago Irigoyen finished with three saves in the victory.

Greenwich advanced to the CIAC class LL semifinals and will play No. 4 seeded Glastonbury, who beat No. 21 seed Danbury High School 3-2 in overtime, for the right to compete in the class LL title game. The game will be played either Tuesday or Wednesday and the time and location are still to be determined.

While the boys soccer team was winning outside in Cardinal Stadium, the GHS girls volleyball team was having the same luck against No. 6 seeded Glastonbury High School, winning 3-0 (25-12, 25-12, 25-16).

In the victory, Greenwich was led by the play or Mirei Kato, who finished with 15 kills, four aces and three digs.

With the victory, Greenwich advances to the class LL semifinals and will play the very familiar Staples High School Wreckers. A week ago, Greenwich beat Staples in a thrilling 3-2 game for the FCIAC championship. The game will be played at Trumbull High School Thursday afternoon at 5 p.m. and the winner will play either top-seeded Cheshire or No. 5 seed Fairfield Ludlowe for the class LL championship.
