Resident says Obamacare is making things worse

FI-Letter-to-the-EditorThe following letter was written to U.S. Rep. Jim Himes and is being reprinted with the author’s permission.

Dear Congressman Himes

I am a resident of Greenwich in your district. I received today a letter from Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield informing me that my family health insurance has gone up by 60%, from $23,000 p.a. to $36,000 p.a., even though my family has been reduced by one person who turns 26 in January. If I include him, the cost rises to $40,000.

How is this possible? The plan already covered most eventualities. It is inconceivable that whatever extra benefits are now included could have caused such a dramatic increase.

And, for what it is worth, when I go to the Connecticut health exchange to try to get a better rate as President Obama assures me I will be able to do, it turns out that Anthem BCBS is virtually the only provider on the exchange, so the rates are the same there as in the letter I just received. The game is rigged.

I have been a registered Democrat for 20 years but I am now voting with and for the Republicans to repeal Obamacare in its entirety. In addition, I believe the president lied to the nation when he promised us that the Affordable Care Act would allow families to keep their health plan if they wanted to.

There is so little an individual citizen can do to turn the tide of this awful piece of legislation, but I believe that a class action suit against the government would be a good place to start on behalf of the aggrieved policyholders such as myself who have been so shabbily treated.

As my representative, you should stand up in Congress and insist that Obamacare be radically altered to avoid the kind of catastrophe the Republicans have been warning us about. I didn’t listen to them at first, but I will now.

You should all be ashamed of yourselves. The administration’s lack of professionalism and ineptitude is stunning.
