Artist gets down to ‘earth’ with exhibition

Don’t miss the work of “earthy” artist Carla Hall, a painter, sculptor and environmentalist at a Greenwich Arts Council (GAC) exhibition on display through Nov. 30.

For Ms. Hall, landscape is far from passive. The GAC says that each of her paintings demonstrates a restive, dynamic mix of color and composition.

The land appears to be heaving in place, creating a series of overlapping surfaces competing with one another for prominence in her pictures, and eliciting a very powerful sense of movement backward and forward in the picture space, according to the GAC.

The artist very aggressively enhances this compositional play with the application of brilliant color to deliberately heighten the movement.

Nature in the 50 paintings on view at the GAC’s Bendheim Gallery is not “restful,” but seeks to engage the viewer from the finely detailed foreground of the canvas on through the distant hills and roiling depiction of the sky.

These same concerns come through equally strongly in her sculptures where Ms. Hall “paints with clay,” working intuitively to create the ceramics from the inside out, building large sculptural living forms that both explore and embody themes of classic ancestors, flowers, torsos at rest and dancing, that the artist generally describes as lifescapes.  Each is grounded in the natural world and human experience.

“If you have your heart and senses wide open, listening to your inner voice, there will always be something to inspire passion, expression — from opening your window to the song of morning birds, to looking at the clouds or moon, to having an intimate conversation with yourself or others,” Ms. Hall said.

The Bendheim Gallery hours are Monday to Friday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday, noon to 4 p.m. Admission is free.
