Von Braun decries negative campaign

FI-Letter-to-the-EditorTo the Editor

Alice Longworth Roosevelt made a phrase famous: “If you don’t have  something nice to say about someone, come sit next to me.” Well, here in Greenwich, Alice would certainly be able to fill a table full of people who would love to sit next to her.

Despite everything we try, one of our Republican candidates for the Board of Education won’t focus on the issues in this election. And we have some incredibly important ones facing us.

Right now the charges he is fabricating are that Peter Sherr is unprepared and doesn’t attend meetings. Others include long-term members of the BOE who should have enough integrity to fabricate charges that contain at least an ounce of truth. Greenwich voters are too intelligent to be fooled by this kind of inanity.

Let’s look at the record. When the BOE campaign started, Greenwich was on the road to adopt the “magic magnet” plan which, according to a statement made this July in Hartford, would require busing 800 to 900 elementary students all over town. Imagine five-year-olds spending two or more hours daily on buses instead of the classrooms?

Peter Sherr, as part of his normal and thorough preparation, discovered a provision in the regulations exempting “unique schools” from Hartford’s dictates. He and I created the “unique schools plan” which reflects the will of the overwhelming majority of parents to keep their kids in neighborhood schools. We know this because the market research we instigated confirmed that 96% of parents responding wanted their children to remain in their neighborhood schools.

These two findings give Greenwich tremendous leverage to negotiate a satisfactory resolution with the state.

Peter relies on facts and careful research and shares the conviction that we are on the BOE to serve the best interests of parents, taxpayers and, above all, our kids. No one could be more against this vicious, negative campaigning than I. As a result of it during the last campaign, I am losing my family home.

Decency will win and so will Peter Sherr.
