Three Greenwich High teams compete in FCIAC action today

The Fairfield County Interscholastic Athletic Conference tournaments are in full swing now and three Greenwich High School teams will be in action today.

The GHS girls volleyball team will start play in the FCIAC tournament later on today. With a conference record of 17-1 (17-2 overall), the Lady Cardinals were able to grab the top seed in this year’s tournament and will host No. 8 seed Fairfield Warde High School (11-7) at 4 p.m.

Although Staples High School also enters the tournament with the same 17-1 FCIAC record, Greenwich’s head-to-head victory against the Wreckers pushed Staples to the second seed. They will host St. Joseph at 4 p.m.  Perennial powers Darien High School (16-2) grabbed the third slot and will host No. 6 seeded Stamford High School (12-6) at 4 p.m.

Rounding out the FCIAC tournament will be No. 4 seeded Fairfield Ludlowe High School. The Falcons come into the postseason with a 16-2 record and were the one conference team that Greenwich High lost to this season. Ludlowe will host No. 5 Ridgefield High School (14-1) tonight at 6 p.m.

The winners will advance to the FCIAC semifinals, which will be played Wednesday at Fairfield Ludlowe High School. The FCIAC title game is slated for Saturday at 4 p.m. at Fairfield Ludlowe.

Also starting competition in the FCIAC will be the Greenwich High School girls swimming and diving team. The Lady Cardinals, in head coach Dick Hawks’ final season with the team, have once again dominated the competition throughout the regular season. Today at 4 p.m., Greenwich will enter the GHS pool for competition in the FCIAC swimming trials.

The FCIAC championship meet gets underway tomorrow afternoon, as the divers from Greenwich High and the rest of the conference travel to Stamford’s Westhill High School pool for the FCIAC diving finals. On Wednesday, its the swimmers turn, as Greenwich High School hosts the FCIAC swimming finals at 4 p.m.

Continuing its run in the FCIAC tournament is the Greenwich High School boys soccer team. After Friday’s 4-1 victory over No. 8 seed Norwalk High School in the conference opening round game, Big Red continues play under the lights at Fairfield Ludlowe High School. Greenwich will be playing in the FCIAC semifinal game against No. 5 seed Wilton High School, who upset No. 4 seed Staples High School 2-0, tonight at 7 p.m.

In the early game, No. 2 seeded Ridgefield High School will take on No. 6 seed Stamford High School at 5 p.m. In the FCIAC opener, Stamford upset third-seed Fairfield Ludlowe 1-0, while Ridgefield got past Fairfield Warde High School, 2-1.

The winners of the FCIAC semi today will advance to Wednesday’s FCIAC championship game, which will be played at Norwalk High’s Sam Testa Field at 7 p.m.
