Vartosu wins Greenwich’s Susannah’s Run

Anatolie Vartosu of Stamford was first out of the 193 finishers while Darien’s Liz Herbert was the women’s champion and she placed fourth overall in the 16th annual Susannah’s Run on Oct. 13 at Greenwich Point Park.

Vartosu, 45, ran away from the field and won the three-mile race with a time of 17 minutes, 45 seconds. Taro Itoh, an 18-year-old from Greenwich, was runner-up with a time of 18:49. Bruce Semer, 45, of Greenwich placed third with an 18:50 and Herbert was just two seconds behind him.

Ryan Lynch, just 13, of Old Greenwich placed sixth with a 19:13.

David Lehman placed 10th with a 20:38 and Jason Metakis was just one second behind him in 11th place. They are both from Old Greenwich.

Greenwich 13-year-old Thomas Steinman placed 13th with a 20:48.

The other Greenwich residents who placed among the top 25 included Old Greenwich 10-year-old Gavin West (15th place, 21:05), Rich Quigley (17th, 21:20), Graham Powis (20th, 22:32), Cos Cob’s Sheila Phelan (21st, 22:33), Old Greenwich’s Lindsay Caruso (24th, 23:02), Kris Scarfone (25th, 23:12), Riverside’s Kate Hadley (26th, 23:14), and Susanne West (29th, 23:17) of Old Greenwich.

Susannah’s Run honors the memory of Susannah Chase and her love of the outdoors and dedication to running. It was the 10th of the 12 events in the Betteridge Greenwich Cup series.

The next event is the Back Country Bushwhack four-mile cross country race at 9:30 a.m. on Nov. 10 at Camp Simmons in Greenwich.
