Popular fall lecture series returns with art talks

Uncover the mysteries of art at two upcoming lectures at the Silvermine Arts Center in New Canaan with the return of its popular fall lecture series, featuring Silvermine Guild Artist and faculty member David Dunlop and Silvermine faculty member Dmitri Wright.

On Oct. 20, Mr. Dunlop will present “Where are Pictures From?” and on Nov. 3, “The Science and Poetry of Impressionism: Ideas for Contemporary Impressionist Painters,” will be presented by Mr. Wright, a Greenwich resident.

Both lectures will be held in the Sara Victoria Hall Auditorium at 4:30 p.m.

In the lecture “Where are Pictures From?” on Oct. 20, Mr. Dunlop will look at how the brain makes and finds images, and examine how artists find and build their images in paintings, sculptures and photographs.

The series continues on Sunday, Nov. 3 with Mr. Wright, and “The Science and Poetry of Impressionism: Ideas for Contemporary Impressionist Painters.”

In this lecture, Mr. Wright will discuss the science and poetry of impressionist painting and drawing.

He will speak about natural and postimpressionism, as well as his ideas for creating a contemporary impressionist’s work.

Displaying his own work as examples, Mr. Wright said he will demonstrate the contemporary impressionist approach to landscape painting and will share his views on Impressionism being a revolution and not a style.

With an artistic lineage that stems from the American Impressionist, Mr. Wright’s work focuses on the preservation and progress of Impressionism.

He is an instructor at the Weir Farm National Historic Park, a national site dedicated to American Impressionism and a lecturer at the Greenwich Historical Society.

All lectures are held at the School of Art Auditorium and ticket prices are $10  for members and $12 for non-members.
