Greenwich High girls soccer, field hockey come up winners at Cardinal Stadium

The Greenwich High School field hockey and girls soccer teams were home at Cardinal Stadium yesterday and both finished with the same results.

The GHS girls soccer team got the ball rolling by beating Stamford High School 1-0. Immediately following the game, the Lady Cards’ field hockey team took the field and finished off Staples High School 5-0.

Against the Black Knights, the Greenwich girls soccer team got its lone goal from junior Alli Maniglia, as she buried the shot past the Stamford goalie with less than 10 minutes gone by in the second half. Junior goalie Kylie Ginsberg finished with six saves in net for Big Red, who upped its overall record to 5-4-1 on the season.

With the lights on at Cardinal Stadium, the Greenwich field hockey team had little trouble against Staples High School, scoring five goals in the first half to come away with the shutout victory.

Leading the way for the Cardinals was senior captain Sydney Cole, who finished with the hat trick. Not to be outdone was Erika Hvolbek, who added two goals in the victory. Between the pipes, GHS was paced by Freddie Bancroft, who finished with five saves on the day.

With the victory, Greenwich improved to 7-1  on the season.
