Commonfund Capital under new leadership

Commonfund recently announced that it will be in new hands with the promotion of Donald T. Pascal to president of Commonfund Capital, Inc., a wholly-owned subsidiary of Commonfund focused on private equity, venture capital and natural resources investing.

The firm has managed more than $13.5 billion in committed capital since its inception.

Mr. Pascal succeeds Susan J. Carter as president. However, Ms. Carter will retain her role as CEO of Commonfund Capital. In that role, Ms. Carter will retain overall strategic leadership of the group and will continue to be actively engaged with investors and managers.

Mr. Pascal and Ms. Carter are both longtime Greenwich residents.

“Don and I have worked closely together for the last 15 years, and I am confident that Commonfund Capital will rise to even greater heights with Don’s leadership,” Ms. Carter said.

Mr. Pascal added, “I am grateful for the confidence that Sue and Commonfund have shown in me and I look forward to this new challenge. In my new role I will continue to advance the mission of Commonfund Capital, and as a result, offer clients the opportunities and strategies to help them reach their investment objectives.”

Mr. Pascal joined Commonfund in 1998. He previously worked at Victory Ventures LLC, Noel Group, Inc. and The Prospect Group, Inc. — all private capital funds organized by Louis Marx, Jr. Previously, he worked at E.M. Warburg Pincus & Co. and Strategic Planning Associates. He has 30 years of direct private capital and multi-manager investment experience, including sourcing, negotiating and monitoring direct investments. Mr. Pascal is presently a member of the advisory boards of several leading private capital limited partnerships. He is also a member of the Investment Committee for The Hotchkiss School and a director of Mallard Ltd., a wholly owned investment subsidiary of The Dietrich Foundation.

Commonfund president and CEO Verne O. Sedlacek stated, “Sue Carter has cultivated Commonfund Capital into one of the world’s leading private capital firms by focusing on investment quality over asset growth.

She has developed an exceptional team, which today has never been stronger, and I look forward to continuing to work with both Sue and Don in the years ahead to maintain Commonfund Capital’s market leadership.”

The Commonfund Capital Operating Committee — including Ms. Carter, Mr. Pascal, Managing Directors Greg Jansen and Peter Burns, and CFO Linda Costa — has been managing all aspects of the Commonfund Capital business for the last 15 years. According to the company, the operating committee approach to leadership will not change, nor will Mr. Pascal’s or Ms. Carter’s roles on Commonfund Capital’s Investment Committee.
