Peldunas will find solutions, not fight personal battles

FI-Letter-to-the-EditorTo the Editor

Greenwich voters are very fortunate to have Brian Peldunas running for the Board of Education.

Brian is a Republican, and while I am a Democrat, I strongly encourage both Democrats and Republicans to vote for him. His agenda to build on basics at the neighborhood elementary schools will benefit all of our schoolchildren.

Brian and I have known each other for three years because of our shared interest in improving the rigor of the math curriculum for our two young daughters at Riverside School. Like most parents, I wanted more but didn’t know how to move ahead.

Brian, on the other hand, rolled up his sleeves, conducted detailed research on the existing curriculum, examined alternatives from nearby school districts and encouraged the board to move forward with a new math curriculum. Without his leadership, our schools would still be using a weak and ineffective math curriculum.

Teachers will appreciate the fact that Brian didn’t just read research about math programs. He noticed the disparity between boys and girls in the math ALP program and set about to find out more about why that was the case. He started a free tutoring program, “Riverside Math Club for Girls Only,” two years ago for a group of now fourth and fifth grade girls. Last year, he ran three different sessions a week to address the varying needs of the girls.

As any teacher will tell you, the real work is done in the classroom, and I believe Brian has a true appreciation for the importance of teachers and of giving them the tools they need to be most effective.

Brian is frugal and I mean that as the greatest of compliments. He appreciates the value of a dollar and will work endlessly to ensure that the return on our tax dollars is optimized. He’s a great listener and is more interested in finding effective solutions to problems than winning personal battles.

On Nov. 5, I encourage both Democrats and Republicans to vote for Brian Peldunas for the Board of Education.

Our town and schools will be better because of him.
