Peldunas has experience and character to strengthen schools

FI-Letter-to-the-EditorTo the Editor

I’m writing in support of Brian Peldunas as a candidate for the Board of Education.

I’ve known Brian for four years and highly recommend him for the post. He’s committed to strengthening our neighborhood schools and providing voluntary options to address overcrowding.

Brian has a passion for education and is involved in our schools. Brian took on the weak “everyday math” curriculum that was the standard for Greenwich Schools until this year, contrasting it to programs used in districts with more successful math programs, like Scarsdale and Westport. He carefully read analyses prepared by the district, enabling him to engage in constructive dialog with teachers and administrators and helped persuade the Board of Education to advance its timetable for reviewing the program.

Brian was selected to be a member of the panel of parents and educators set up to evaluate and recommend a new math program, and its recommendation of the Singapore math program was adopted by the board and implemented this year. Brian understands that the basics of reading, writing, and arithmetic form the foundation upon which children build the critical thinking skills they need in life.

Brian has followed school policy issues closely, having attended almost every school board meeting and work session for the past two years.

Brian has had a successful career in business, first at Credit Suisse, where he retired as a managing director after 25 years, and recently as a small business owner. Brian’s attention to detail, honed at Credit Suisse, will be especially important in ensuring school programs are based on sound analysis.

Brian gives to the community and to others, continuing the characteristics that led him to become an Eagle Scout as a boy. Brian has been treasurer for the semiannual Riverside School book fair for the past two years and is a member of the Parish Council at St. Catherine of Siena.

Brian’s passion, commitment and skills make him eminently qualified to serve our children and community on the Board of Education.

Perhaps most important, Brian is a great person and I highly recommend him.
