Greenwich High field hockey upends Fairfield Warde, 3-1

With a strong second half of play, the Greenwich High School field hockey team was able to get past Fairfield Warde High School earlier today, 3-1.

“We are starting to gel together,” Greenwich High head coach Allyn Orrico said. “It took us a little longer than I would have like in the fist half to get going. We need to become a 60 minute team and not a one-half team. We got lucky today because Warde played us so tough and we really couldn’t get a hold of things until late in the game. However, I am very proud of our girls with the way we responded after halftime. They really put it together in the second half.”

After Sarah Steinbaugh scored the team’s first goal of the game, Greenwich’s Sydney Cole came back and scored both goals in the second half. In Cole’s second goal of the game, Jessica Lagano came up with the assist.

The Lady Cardinals finished with seven shots on the goal and Freddie Bancroft finished with 10 saves.

“We have a mix of older players that are very talented,” Orrico said. “They have been here for a while and know how to play the game. Then we have some new girls that need to step up and learn the game quickly. They also need to gel with those older players and I think having trust with each other and playing with the team concept is crucial for us. I am starting to see that happen.”

With the victory. Greenwich improves to 2-0 on the season.
