The polo season closed in style last weekend in Greenwich with the second annual Royal Salute Jubilee Cup.

The season closed, just as it opened, with a high degree of star power. And while last weekend’s event didn’t quite rival the pomp that greeted England’s Prince Harry when he came to Greenwich in May to kick off the season with the Sentebale Royal Salute Polo Club, it did have a major name from the world of polo on hand.

Facundo Pieres, the highest ranked polo player in the world, was part of the competition on Sunday, captaining the Royal Salute Team, playing alongside Greenwich resident Peter Brant.

And Royal Salute is more than just a regal name for the sport, it’s also a leading luxury Scotch and, quite unsurprisingly, the brand was celebrated at the event it supports with a whiskey salute to celebrate the match.

But the event wasn’t just about the “sport of kings” (as polo aficionados enjoy calling it) or even good whiskey. This was also a chance for Mr. Brant, a noted art collector, to show off a collection of Andy Warhol’s work during a special VIP tour that preceded the match. The event was also a chance for Greenwich residents and polo fans to come out in their finest, with many wearing hats that threatened to put the Kentucky Derby to shame. Several fans brought out their dogs for the event too and there was even a demonstration of another sport as the White Plains Rugby Football Club put on an exhibition to show off what their sport is all about.

Post photographer John Ferris Robben was on hand for the match and a slideshow of his work will be available online at Greenwich-post.com on Monday.
