von Braun fires back at Peldunas’ and Bernstein’s claims

FI-Letter-to-the-EditorTo the Editor

We need a spirited debate on how to improve our education system in Greenwich, but instead, the two signatories of last week’s letter in the Post used misinformation, untruths and innuendo.

This is more personal destruction politics infecting Greenwich. Why would Republican candidates openly attack other elected Republicans? You have to wonder who is advising Peter Bernstein and Brian Peldunas in their campaigns.

I’ve been discussing our proposal with other board members since June. Mr. Bernstein and Mr. Peldunas seem naively unaware that board meetings are public forums and information is routinely provided to the public and local press a few days before, as we did here.

They claim we “…would have you believe that neighborhood schools in Greenwich are under ‘threat’ of attack. That’s far from the truth.”

But parents, residents and taxpayers certainly don’t agree. The stated number of students who would have to move to meet the state’s racial balance mandate is 800 to 900, more than the combined student bodies of New Lebanon and Hamilton Avenue.

Yes, the board voted unanimously against forced busing. But, unfortunately for the authors attempting to prove our ignorance, a vote by a local board does not trump state law.

Our focus is on strengthening neighborhood schools. We want them to become “community schools” serving the needs of parents and children.

Mr. Peldunas and Mr. Bernstein claim we would not be so colossally ignorant if we had attended the numerous public forums. I have attended every one, including the Spanish language forum, and spoke at several.

I note the candidate running on the basis of having been president of the Hamilton Avenue PTA did not attend the forum held there.

Our proposal is based on solid, published research and some 20 years of personal experience in educating “minority” populations. We want what’s best for the children, the families and the town we love.

Mr. Bernstein and Mr. Peldunas, let’s stop the cheap shots, falsehoods and distractions. Our children deserve a serious debate by serious people to assure a bright future.

If you disagree with our plan, develop your own alternative.
