Greenwich High water polo comes up perfect at U.S. Naval Academy tourney

This past weekend, the Greenwich High School boys water polo team traveled to the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, where the squared off against two of the top Illinois teams, along with a team from San Juan, Puerto Rico and Baltimore’s Calvert Hall.

In all, the Cardinals built large early leads in all four games before slowing down play and substituting liberally.

On Saturday, Big Red opened with a 14-5 victory over Calvert Hall and followed with a 17-8 over East Lyons Township from LaGrange,Ill.

After blazing to a 10-point first period lead in Sunday morning’s game against the team from San Juan, the Cardinals settled down for a 15-9 win. They closed out the weekend with a high-scoring 22-11 win over Napersville High School, also from Illinois.

The two leading scorers both weekends were Julian Fraser and Tyler Triscari. In Erie, Fraser had 15 goals and Triscari added 11. At Annapolis, Triscari had 17, while Fraser wasn’t far behind with 15.

In goal, Steven Michaud had 22 saves on the Pennsylvania trip.  Sharing duties at the Naval Academy, Michaud pulled down 17 shots and fellow senior Alex Jahns added 12.

The Cardinals spent the last day of August in Erie, Pa., where they defeated three Pennsylvania high schools, including the state’s defending champion, North Allegheny from Pittsburgh, 11-7.

The other wins came against the hosting McDowell High School team, 16-2 and Erie’s Cathedral Prep, 22-6.

The Greenwich High School Water Polo team has already played in two weekend tournaments, compiling a perfect 7-0 record.

Next up, the Cardinals will travel to West Point tomorrow to play the Academy’s team, which competes in the national club program.
