Novakowski is candidate with character

Letter writer D. Morgan Saunders (Greenwich Post Aug. 22 edition) seems confused about which party needs to “reconsider” it’s endorsement for tax collector. As a lifelong, loyal Republican voter, I will proudly cast my vote for Democratic candidate Rick Novakowski this November.

Mr. Saunders cites “reputation” and “character” in his vague and ill-informed diatribe. Truth is, Mr. Laudonia’s reputation since his days on the RTM (where he had the poorest attendance rate in his district) has followed him into the Tax Collector’s office.

“Character?” After sending out late tax bills and losing numerous taxpayers’ checks, instead of showing leadership and taking ownership of his role in the debacle, Laudonia blamed everyone from the courier to the software company he outsourced to. He then admonished the taxpayers themselves stating, “People have to be intelligent enough to know things go awry.”

It was only when the BET demanded taxpayers get an extension because of his mistake that he yielded to their demand. I must sadly admit that my party leaders have chosen partisan loyalty over competence in once again nominating Mr. Laudonia.

Mr. Novakowski, on the other hand, has a “reputation” for standing up for the citizens of this town and has never hesitated to take on leaders from either party when our point of view needed a voice. He’s never played it safe or taken the easy way out by blaming others, but instead worked with everyone to find solutions when, “things go awry.”

To go along with his fine “character,” Mr. Novakowski has a resume that shows he is a true leader in the private sector, overseeing a large staff and business operation.

The last two elections have shown the built in discontent with Mr. Laudonia within the Republican party. His numbers have consistently come in 15-20% below those on the Republican ticket with him. Please join me and the many other Republicans that will be casting our ballots for Rick Novakowski for tax collector this November.
