Greenwich resident Leslie Novella is one of just three lucky recipients of the Connecticut Chapter of the National Association of Housing and Redevelopment Officials’ (CONN-NAHRO) annual John J. Kelly Scholarship for the 2013-2014 academic year.

Three, $3,500 awards were issued to public housing or Section 8 program residents from the communities of Hartford, Wethersfield and Greenwich. The recipients received their awards at the 15th Annual CONN-NAHRO Convention and Exhibition at Mohegan Sun on Aug. 27.

Ms. Novella is a resident on property overseen by the Greenwich Housing Authority and is heading off to college this fall. She will be joining the class of 2017 at Babson College in Wellesley, Mass. She graduated from high school with high honors with a grade point average of 4.2. Ms. Novella’s high school counselor said she believes she is a true success story because she moved to Connecticut from Peru in fourth grade without knowing a word of English.

“What she lacked in English she more than compensated for with her burning desire to learn and succeed in the U.S.,” the counselor said.

Ms. Novella has won more than 15 awards in mathematics, biology and Spanish. She has worked as a tutor, camp counselor and home health-aid, and has volunteered at Greenwich Hospital, with the Girl Scouts and with the Holy Rosary Youth Group. She plays volleyball and served as the editor-in-chief of her high school yearbook.
