Accident shuts down Merritt Parkway section, residents should avoid King Street until 3 p.m.

UPDATE MONDAY 4:35 P.M— Police say that traffic on the Merritt Parkway is now flowing normally and the northbound route has been reopened.

A tractor trailer accident has forced the closure of a key northbound part of the Merritt Parkway and is sending additional traffic through town.

According to Greenwich Police Department Public Information Officer Lt. Kraig Gray, a tractor trailer struck the overpass on King Street Monday morning. This caused the truck’s load to be dislodged into the roadway, causing traffic delays. Right now state police are at the scene detouring traffic into town, causing heavier usage than normal of roads like King Street in town in the area of Route 15. Because of this residents are being asked to avoid this area for the time being if possible.

The Parkway is currently shut down northbound at the state line between Greenwich and Port Chester, N.Y. because of the obstruction from the truck’s cargo. This impacts traffic coming in northbound into Connecticut. Lt. Gray said the area is being cleaned up but this is expected to take until at least 3 p.m. on Monday

Trucks aren’t permitted on the Merritt Parkway and it’s unclear why this truck was there.
