Car accident causes Lake Avenue closure, power loss

A portion of Lake Avenue is expected to remain closed “for some time” after police say a vehicle struck a utility pole there on Wednesday afternoon.

According to Greenwich Police Department Lt. Kraig Gray, a vehicle driven by a 16-year-old, struck a utility pole around the area of 270 Lake Avenue at approximately 3:30 p.m. on Wednesday. Lt. Gray did not state whether there were any injuries from the one-car accident but did say the driver “lost control” of the vehicle.

Lt. Gray said this caused “severe damage” to the pole, necessitating Connecticut Light & Power (CL&P) to come to the scene to replace it. That work is underway, forcing a closure of the road and for power to be cut off to that area so the work can be done safely. According to CL&P, there are seven customers currently without power in town.

Lt. Gray said it was unclear how long the portion of the road would be closed except that it would be “for some time” due to the nature of the repair. He did offer optimism that it would be completed in time for Thursday morning rush hour.
