U.S. Sen. Richard Blumenthal (D-Conn.), a Greenwich resident, was a guest at the event which honored the work of Patricia Beirne, program director of the hospital’s Women’s and Children’s Services department.

Steady summer rain showers couldn’t dampen the spirits of the 300 revelers from Fairfield and Westchester counties who came out to celebrate Under the Stars in recognition of Greenwich Hospital’s infant and children’s services departments at Riverside Yacht Club on July 12.

U.S. Sen. Richard Blumenthal (D-Conn.) and Greenwich First Selectman Peter Tesei were among the guests supporting the hospital.

Proceeds from the Under the Stars event will benefit Greenwich Hospital’s smallest patients in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) and children through age 21 who seek medical care from the Pediatric Services department. Each year, the NICU cares for an average of 300 critically ill infants and the Pediatrics department handles nearly 20,000 visits from infants and children of all ages.

During the event, Patricia Beirne, program director for Women’s and Children’s Services, was honored for her 43-year career at Greenwich Hospital, most of which has been devoted to caring for mothers and their children in one capacity or another.

In describing Ms. Beirne’s many admirable qualities, Greenwich Hospital President and CEO, Frank Corvino said, “Many people say working at Greenwich Hospital is like being part of a large family. Greenwich Hospital is proud to count Pat as one of our own.”

While delivering her remarks, Ms. Beirne surprised Mr. Corvino by presenting him with a gift in honor of his 25 years of unfailing support and guidance at Greenwich Hospital.

“You have always stood by all of us in the NICU and Pediatrics, caring for the tiny patients we see each day,” Ms. Beirne said. “We deeply appreciate your inspiring leadership, demonstrated by the investments you have made, not only with financial support but also by adding wonderfully talented physicians, nurses and clinicians to our staff.”

Those who attended Under the Stars bid on an array of exciting live and silent auction items including far flung trips and adventures, a custom playhouse and a breakfast and personal tour of the U.S. Capitol presented by Mr. Blumenthal, who jokingly assured the crowd that the donation was his own and did not come from taxpayers’ pockets.

Mr. Blumenthal, a Greenwich resident, commented that he, his children and wife have all had occasions to be treated at Greenwich Hospital.

“I don’t know of any better hospital than Greenwich Hospital,” he said, adding, “The professionalism and caring of the people who work there are unparalleled anywhere else.”

Following cocktails, which included a signature drink, The Broken Lemon, designed by sponsor Broken Shed Vodka, and a wide array of hors d’oeuvres, those in attendance entered a festive candlelit tent designed by Renny & Reed of New York for an elegant dinner. The party band, Night Market, provided lively music throughout the night and pumped up the volume for post-prandial dancing, while some guests captured one-of-a-kind moments at the onsite photo booth.

The Pediatric department at Greenwich Hospital offers a full range of inpatient and outpatient programs to meet the health and development needs of children. The staff includes pediatricians, medical specialists, nutritionists, therapists, psychologists and other experts. The Neonatal Intensive Care Unit accommodates the growing number of newborns from Connecticut and New York who require special care. As a Level III-A NICU, infants are monitored 24 hours a day by neonatologists, specially trained neonatal nurses and neonatal nurse practitioners using the most sophisticated and up-to-date equipment.
