Tesei and Theis must sign on with Mayors Against Illegal Guns

FI-Letter-to-the-EditorTo the Editor

I would love to see our great town represented as part of the national bipartisan coalition of Mayors Against Illegal Guns.

More than 1,000 mayors have signed from across the country since 2006 and I urge Mr. Tesei and Mr. Theis to join Mr. Marzullo in supporting this valuable alliance. We must never forget that in Connecticut 26 youngsters and teachers were massacred in an assault weapons attack in their elementary school.

I urge us to stand united in solidarity with those victimized and those yet to be victimized. We know there will be more. We’re not immune. Those could have been Greenwich children slaughtered, with parents from our town trying to recognize their babies following a senseless massacre. I’ve been an ER nurse and I’ve seen what ordinary gunshots do to a body, let alone what assault weapons do to the bodies of youngsters.

This coalition requests maximum penalties for carrying, using or selling illegal guns; getting military-style assault weapons and high capacity ammunition clips off our streets; for background checks for all gun purchasers including gun shows and flea markets, and for holding gun dealers accountable for sales to “straw purchasers” who sell guns to others forbidden to purchase them legally. How can anyone not support this?

These recommendations are supported by more than 90% of people, including 89% of weapon owners. Our entire delegation of representatives in Hartford, all Republicans, supported Connecticut’s stricter gun laws, and showed courage in doing so. All our Greenwich Democratic leadership nationally supports gun control.

Mr. Tesei and Mr. Theis must put the weight of their positions behind this national movement. “If we’re not part of the solution, we’re part of the problem” could not more aptly fit. Please, Mr. Tesei, I implore you to join Mayors Against Illegal Guns. There’s strength in numbers.

A petition has been signed by hundreds of Greenwich people urging the first selectman to join Mayors Against Illegal Guns. It will be presented to the selectman at Town Hall today, Aug. 8, at 10 a.m.
