Resident rewarded for improving her heart health

Four state residents, including a Greenwich woman, were recently recognized with the 2013 Greater New Haven Lifestyle Change Award for their inspiring and life changing improvement at the Greater New Haven Heart Walk at Savin Rock.

Town resident Mary White received the American Heart Association’s Lifestyle Change Award for making simple changes to improve her heart health.

According to the association, Ms. White found herself overweight and unhealthy and knew it was time for a change when she struggled walking up stairs and suffered from sleep apnea. Ms. White decided to begin by making a change in her eating habits.

She reportedly improved her diet and, in just eight weeks, lost 25 pounds. Now she is working toward her goal of losing 100 pounds and is already feeling better than she has in years. She is taking spinning classes and taking the stairs knowing each step is giving her a longer, stronger life.

The Lifestyle Change Award is presented by Schick and is part of the American Heart Association’s “My Heart. My Life.” national initiative which is a comprehensive health, wellness and fitness platform to empower Americans to become heart healthy.

The initiative offers a simple set of solutions that focus on improving nutrition, physical activity and children’s health. Through the initiative, the American Heart Association is working to help individuals and families understand how to make incremental changes for a substantial long-term health impact.
