Turcsanyi wins Greenwich Cup Triathlon

Joseph Turcsanyi of Greenwich led the field of 569 finishers en route to winning the Betteridge Greenwich Cup Triathlon and female champion Donna Kay Ness placed fifth overall Sunday at Greenwich Point.

Turcsanyi, 36, won with a time of 1 hour, nine minutes and 19 seconds. The course began with a half-mile swim on a triangular out-and-back course on Long Island Sound, followed by a 15-mile bicycle ride and ended with a 3-mile run on the roads and trails in Greenwich Point.

Turcsanyi finished two minutes and three seconds ahead of runner-up Francesc Lopez, 35, of New Haven. Lopez had a time of 1:11:22 and Peter Eddy placed third with the same time of 1:11:22. Brendan McEwan, 25, of New Canaan placed fourth with a 1:11:57.

Donna Kay Ness, 50, rounded out the top five as the first of 183 female finishers with a 1:12:17. Megan Kelly of Stamford (1:15:38) was the runner-up woman, 21st overall and the winner of her Women 30-39 age division.

Emma Langley, a 17-year-old from Cos Cob, was the third female, 35th overall and the champion in the Women 19-and-under age division.

Turcsanyi led a group of four Greenwich residents among the top nine.

Peter Bailey (1:12:21) and Zachariah Pratt (1:12:30), both from Riverside placed sixth and seventh, respectively, overall and they were second and third, respectively, in their Men 30-39 division.

Scott Weiss (1:12:49), of Armonk, N.Y., placed eighth. Riverside’s Kevin Cavanaugh, 42, was ninth overall and third in his Men 40-49 division with a 1:13:17. Chris Budden (1:13:18) of Port Chester, N.Y. took 10th.

There were 15 Greenwich residents who finished among the top 50. In addition to the aforementioned five, the other 10 triathletes from Greenwich in the top 50 were Bruce Semer (17th place with a time of 1:15:05), Paul Fanelli (18th, 1:15:24), Tim Raw (20th, 1:15:34), Stephen Kurczewski (22nd, 1:15:55), Peter Hirsh (23rd, 1:16:01), Ashley Honey (26th, 1:16:58), Viorel Stroie (28th, 1:17:12), Chris Pollack (42nd, 1:20:14), Old Greenwich’s Mike Verrelli (44th, 1:20:25) and Evan Ciecimirski (47th, 1:20:33).

Kati Dixon, 42, of Riverside won her Women 40-49 age division, she placed fifth among females and was 54th overall with her clocking of 1:21:17.

Greenwich’s Irene Horowitz, 51, was the Women 50-59 division champion with a 1:26:36. Blanche O’Connel, 65, of Greenwich was the Women 60-69 division champion with a 2:35:26.
