It’s almost time for St. Catherine’s Carnival of Fun

Where does one go in mid-August for summertime fun? In Riverside the answer for years has always been to the St. Catherine’s Carnival of Fun.

This year the church is celebrating its 100th anniversary and the carnival will be held from Tuesday, Aug. 13 through Saturday, Aug. 17. The hours are 6 to 10 p.m. on Tuesday and Wednesday and until 11 on Thursday, Friday and Saturday.

The carnival is a great place to entertain out-of-town guests, to “dine out” during the hot August evenings and a place where family and friends can be together, where someone else is hovering over the grill, where someone else is preparing the food, doing the cleanup and is in charge of the entertainment. All you have to do is show up.

This is where the famous and the infamous come to be dunked, where the pizza fritta sizzles under the careful hands of Fran Judice, where you get delectable grilled sausage and peppers and grilled marinated chicken breasts, where you will enjoy a different seafood entrée each night from Aux Delices, where the ice cream is fresh, where DiMare’s cannolis arrive minutes before serving, where you can dance to different styles of music every night and where the merry-go-round twirls and lights sparkle and game booths click away.

This year you can double or triple your pleasure with three bracelet nights on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday. For $25 you can ride all the rides you wish all night long. Face painting, a magician, and even bingo will round out the entertainment.

To reduce the hassle of parking, guests can park at Eastern Middle School and take a shuttle bus to the carnival. The shuttle starts at 5:30 each night and ends 30 minutes after the carnival closes.

St. Catherine’s has a huge committee of parishioners and friends who work through the year to put the show together. This event is what enables St. Catherine’s to provide many of the educational opportunities, spiritual enrichment and  works of social justice for which the parish has always been known.
