Greenwich residents Per and Astrid Heidenreich, along with Siemens Financial Services, took a bite out of the 14th annual Red Apple Awards in April where they were honored for their commitment to environmental education.

The awards were presented at The Maritime Aquarium in Norwalk during “Cirque de la Mer,” the annual fund-raising event that honors companies, organizations and individuals who share the aquarium’s concern for the natural world and environmental education. More than $630,000 was raised to help present The Maritime Aquarium’s environmental education programming to students throughout Connecticut and the tri-state area.

This year’s Cirque de la Mer was themed “Argentum,” which is Latin for silver — in honor of the aquarium’s upcoming 25th anniversary. The 350 guests in attendance enjoyed cocktails in the aquarium galleries, an elegant sit-down dinner and silent and live auctions.

Per Heidenreich, with the support of the Per & Astrid Heidenreich Family Foundation, has led the process for funding, designing and building a new green research vessel for The Maritime Aquarium. This new boat, a 65-foot electric/diesel hybrid catamaran scheduled to launch in spring 2014, will replace the institution’s current 33-year-old diesel-powered trawler. It will more than double the aquarium’s capacity to take students and the public out onto Long Island Sound to experience its remarkable ecosystem directly.

Proceeds from Cirque de la Mer will support The Maritime Aquarium’s Red Apple Fund for Student Enrichment. This fund helps to make the aquarium’s unique marine science and environmental education programs available — through field trips and traveling teacher programs — to students and teachers in the tri-state area who otherwise may not be able to participate.
