Did you know that almost 24 million children in the US ages two to 19 are overweight or obese?

Doing their part to educate children and parents alike on the importance of fitness and healthy lifestyle habits early on, the Old Greenwich School PTA Wellness Committee lined up some exciting events for Fitness Week, which took place June 3 to 7.

Triathlete Karen Neuman of Greenwich Track Club led an Endurance Fun Run for St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital on June 6, including a warm up/cool down and other activities at the run.

Yoga with Brooke de Weaver from Yogi Says and Tracy Bruce from Tracy Bruce Yoga invited children to get active during recess, along with Robbin Ashenfelter of Sportsplex, who offered Zumba.

Children were also encouraged at home to substitute “screen time” for “physical activity time” by keeping track on a form they filled out and submitted at the end of Fitness Week.
